The Daily Doughnut: a front page with a rule for tone
Demonstration build · landing page · Chicago, IL · see the build
The Daily Doughnut is a demonstration publication we created ourselves. It has no real newsroom or paying publisher. Its bylines, events, quotes and stories are sample editorial content and must not be presented as reporting or customer results.
The brief we set ourselves
An odd-news email needs a recognisable editorial rule: surprising, funny or kind without humiliating the people inside the story. A visitor should understand the lead story, scan categories, see where the week's material is meant to come from and subscribe without being promised a flood of mail.
Decisions that shaped the page
- One story gets newspaper scale. The first screen establishes voice before the grid asks the reader to browse.
- A visible tone meter replaces vague branding. It makes the publication's internal selection rule understandable to the reader.
- Categories describe the kind of curiosity. Animals, small towns and unusual jobs organise the archive without pretending every story is breaking news.
- The email promise is restrained. The signup explains the format and leaves the rest of the week alone.
